October 2026- Notification of Health Benefits Cost Increase

Dear Emerson Public Schools Community,

I want to provide an early update regarding an important financial consideration that will be part of our upcoming budget process for the 2027-2028 school year.

Recently, we received notification that the School Employees’ Health Benefits Commission voted to approve the recommended 34.4% increase in health benefit costs. This is a significant increase that will affect school districts across New Jersey, including the Emerson Public Schools.

While this news is certainly significant, I want to emphasize that there is no need for our school community to panic or draw conclusions about what this may mean for our school district at this time. We are still in the early stages of our budget development process, and, like school districts across New Jersey, we recognize that we have a challenging budget season ahead. We will take the time necessary to carefully evaluate our options, consider the many factors that will shape our budget, and make thoughtful and responsible decisions that support our students, staff, families, and community.

Over the coming weeks and months, our administration and Finance Committee will work carefully through the budget to understand the full impact of this increase. We will consider all available options, including potential efficiencies, reductions, revenue opportunities, and other strategies that may help us address these financial challenges.

Throughout this process, we will remain especially mindful of two important responsibilities: protecting the educational experience of every Emerson student and being responsible stewards of our taxpayers’ resources. Any potential changes will be considered thoughtfully and with careful attention to their impact on our students, staff, families, and community.

We will also continue to closely monitor developments at both the federal and state levels, including any changes in funding, legislation, regulations, or other financial considerations that may affect school districts and our budget. As additional information becomes available, we will incorporate it into our planning and keep our school community informed.

The budget process takes time, and there will be many factors to consider before we arrive at a final budget. Our commitment is to approach this work thoughtfully, strategically, transparently, and collaboratively.

Most importantly, please know that we are considering all options, we are not making decisions prematurely, and we will continue to communicate with our community as the budget process develops.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of the Emerson Public Schools. Our focus throughout this process will remain on providing an excellent educational experience for every Cavo, while responsibly planning for a sustainable future of our schools and our community.
